I havent run it for a few weeks now and I am in the process of rebuilding the front hubs/bearings and driveshafts that were fooked (expensive). This has taken me a while, mainly as I have been busy with other non S2 stuff. Its all done now, except for the left hub which I'll pick up tomorrow from the place thats pressing the bearing in.
The engine still makes a noise when cold, but once warm it more or less dissapears. If it is all ready for the weekend I'll be bringing it to Dougs, if not I'll be up in the Focus (at least the petrol is free in that).

the piston/syl clarense are org ca 3-5/100 mm, but the JE want 6-8/100mm.if the piston are short below the wristpin,it will rattle some with 13-16/100 mm.after a while
you have some oilconsume, because the oilring in piston are worn out.....8-((

Maybe if you all have a collective brainstorming session on the noise at the RR meet, you might be able to figure out what it is. I’m sure it would be nice to work out what’s causing the noise, and whether it’s harmful or not.

I have checked everything else and its all in spec.

It does sound very much like it, I just needed someone else to listen to it too.

I am thinking about what to do about it now.

Are Doug's piston/bore clearances less than yours?

I don't know, I havent measured them and I doubt he has either.

I don't know for sure that it is slap, but it does behave and sound like it is.

Mark - PLEASE don't take this the wrong way... I have *SO* much respect for the work you have done and the things you have taught many of us here, but I'll bet you are kicking yourself for trusting the ring sizing to a machine shop (albeit a good one)without recording the clearance meaurements for your own records.

I trusted the rebore and ring fitting to the machine shop I used. They had Ross and JE pistons sitting on the shelf so they knew about those products. I never checked my bore size before fitting everything. I feel gutted for you Mark.

I still don't know for sure it is slap, it sounds like it is and I can't find anything else wrong.

Don't concern yourself about me taking your comments the wrong way. However........ if it does turn out to be slap, you are rather stating the obvious........of course I regret not checking the work done by the shop, but like Doug says, I trusted them, and to be fair to them, as I said above, I still don't 100% know for sure that it is slap yet.

I am not sure what you mean by 'ring sizing', this link describes what causes it.

Bottom line is if it is just slap observed at cold temperatures then its no big drama, BUT it sure would be nice to know the clearances and piston ring gaps on yours and Doug's to see if there is any difference.

You say it sounds like slap, does it go when warm? unless you have massive (read totally F*u*k up machining) piston clearance its not that likely, did it happen staight away? has it got worse??

If it is piston slap youll use oil and have loads of blow-by- is the engine breathing heavy??? down on compression???? It could be a broken piston skirt or piston ring- I'd suggest a stip down or it could get expensive.
